Every Good Morning

March 2022 Day 29

I watch the sky
where I keep my eyes this March
when I rake
when I clip the stalks which crack
like kindling
filling minutes with any intensity
anything to evade
a tenuous life
just shy of 70 I watch the sky
scribbling this
with redwings buzzing close above me
under a hazy sun
thinking
no one should be granted quiet
these universal yearnings
peace impermissible
while women wrapped in winter coats
crowd cellars in the rubble of cities
huddling children to their bodies
under bombs
under this same sun that falls on bodies
in sun-struck streets for days
thinking
let me not think about
let me not think
let me exit into something
whose antenna shakes like reeds
when the wind strikes them
when storms
when weeping falls upon them
under the eyes of inhumans
let me slip into something
whose eyes watch clouds
taste imminent rain
gather tremors from the deep
before the deep breaks open upon them
whose head flicks, ears prick up
to wailing oceans away
thinking
let me think into anything
to empty the minutes
into a vanishing
under a half-moon hazed
by high clouds
at last light.
